Syracuse

  • Siracusa
  • City

Syracuse is small and nicely seated  on the shores of the gulf with gardens and promenades going down as far as the waves.

It is something quite different from the magnificent metropolis that it was in fifth century.

Syracuse was founded in 734 BC by settlers from Corinth who were inspired in choosing the name from a nearby arsh, called Syraka.

On July 15th, 2005, Siracusa, together with the Pantalica Archeological Site, was officially inscribed into the World Heritage List.

The site, as depicted by the official UNESCO description, ‘consists of two separate elements, containing outstanding vestiges dating back to Greek and Roman times.

The Necropolis of Pantalica contains over 5,000 tombs cut into the rock near open stone quarries, most of them dating from the 13th to 7th century BC.

Vestiges of the Byzantine era also remain in the area, notably the foundations of the Anaktoron (Prince’s Palace).

The other part of the property, Ancient Syracuse, includes the nucleus of the city’s foundation as Ortygia by Greeks from Corinth in the 8th century BC.

Many remains bear witness to the troubled history of Sicily.
